Introduction to the Student Studies Department
Students, as one of the largest and most significant social groups, face distinctive issues and challenges in relation to their lived student experience. In this regard, a wide range of problems exists that are specific to student life and therefore require independent and systematic study aimed at identifying and cataloguing issues, setting priorities, describing and explaining them, and proposing clear, well-defined policy-oriented and practical strategies and solutions. Topics such as dormitory life, students’ mental and social health, student participation and organizational membership, hope for the future, and students’ current and real concerns, expectations, and needs are among the key areas that demand serious and in-depth investigation.
These issues are of even greater importance and urgency at the University of Tehran, as the country’s first and largest university and a symbol of higher education in Iran, with approximately 50,000 students, around 12,000 of whom reside in university dormitories. In other words, conducting student-oriented studies and research at the University of Tehran as a comprehensive and representative case can, to a considerable extent, reduce the need for similar investigations in other student environments. Accordingly, it is essential that a dedicated unit undertake student studies with the aim of uncovering real issues and needs and providing operational solutions to resolve or mitigate them.
The Institute for Social Studies and Research of the University of Tehran, in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences, possesses the necessary capacity to pursue this mission within a specialized unit entitled the “Student Studies and Research Department.” By drawing on the capacities of faculty members, researchers, and students from various disciplines, this Department seeks not only to deepen theoretical and empirical knowledge of student living environments in Iran, but also to play an effective role in shaping sound, scientific, and informed policymaking in student-related domains. The objectives and programs of this research Department are outlined below.
